How To Install Club Car Precedent Brake Light Switch

broken image

Replacement
I just purchased a 2004 Precedent and the brake light were not working. This is my first Precedent (I have several DS models) and the wiring for the brake switch is completely different from the DS. Since the brake light bulbs were good I bought a new switch (not a Club Car part) and it required some modifications and fab work to install. This cart has 4 12volt batteries.
My question is that I have turn signals and a horn and the wiring for the brake light switch has a three wire harness with one each red, black and tan wires. I am getting 0.0 volts on the black wire (I assumed it to be ground) when tested on the first battery, but 35.9 volts on another battery., 0.0 volts on the red wire (which assumed to be hot) and 0.0 volts on the tan wire, but 28.1 volts when tested to another battery. Upon further investigation I can not find any wiring going to a battery (that I have not confirmed goes somewhere else).
My questions is that since I can not find where these wires are getting power, I am going to rewire the brake light switch and I know red to power and black to ground, but where does the tan wire go, I need this for the timer.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.
Let's brake this down into two separate issues.
1) The Relay in the photo I posted (behind the dash board by the 9-pin connector):

This is the Relay You do not need need if Your 12v power is only available when the Key Switch is ON.
When 48v is applied to the 2 small quick connectors (0.187') of the Relay, The 2 big quick connectors (0.250') are connected together.
If the Relay is not working, You can just connect the Solid Blue with the Green/White wires together (the wires with the 0.250' quick connectors).
That will provide power to the Pedal switch, but only when the Key Switch is ON because of Your converter.

2) The Brake Pedal Switch:

When You press the pressure switch pad, the contacts of the switch close and it sends the power to the brake lights.
Those contacts are only rated for approximately 0.5 amps, so it will not work with incandescent brake light bulbs.
You need to add a 12v relay, bosch type available from any auto parts store.
Connect it to the wires by the brake pad as follows:
Red wire (female bullet connector) from harness goes to one of the Pedal switch wires.
Red wire (female bullet connector) from harnessalso goes to Terminal #30 of the Relay.
Black wire (quick connector) from harness goes to Terminal #85 of the Relay.
The other wire from the Pedal Switch goes to Terminal #86 of the Relay.
Brown Wire (male bullet connector) from harness goes to Terminal #87 of the Relay.

Now when You press the pedal, the Pedal switch only uses about 0.02 amps to power the Relay coil (Terminals #85 an #86).
The Relay N.O. Contacts close (Terminals #30 and #87) and sends power to the Brake Lights.

  • As a result, Club Car Precedent golfcarts made after 2008.5 need a basic wiring harness. So, for example, if you own a 2009 Club Car Precedent, you would not want to order a 2004-2008.5 light kit as it will not come with the necessary harness to hook up your lights. Instead, you'd want to opt for the 2008.5+ kit.
